April Fools Day game not a joke for Tyrone JV softball team

JV players Allison Hosko and Azia Barnett are working to bounce back from their recent 40-0 loss.

”So many people will think it’s an April Fools Day joke, but it’s not!”

That’s what freshman starting pitcher Hailey Durbin said after the Tyrone junior varsity softball’s record breaking 40-0 loss to Huntingdon on April 1.

The game was so lopsided that Huntingdon’s first-inning lasted as long as the varsity’s entire game.

The main problem was the lack of experience of Tyrone’s junior varsity pitchers.

The girls have two pitchers, freshman Hailey Durbin and sophomore Cheyanne Burket. Both are just learning how to pitch and this being their first game, they were very nervous.

”I have never been a pitcher before. It’s so much different from being in the game to pitch a game. The pitchers have so much power to make or break a team,” said Durbin.

After the disastrous start, varsity pitcher Shannon Gearhart came to the rescue and pitched for the JV in the second inning.

She struck out the first three batters she faced, ending the inning.

“‘Their attitudes are in the right place,” said Gearhart ”they just need to get pitchers and they’ll have a solid team.”

The game was called by the mercy rule after the second inning, with an incredible score of 40-0.

Many of the girls said that even though they lost so badly, they still learned something positive about themselves.

“We stayed together as a team,” said freshman player Alexis Condract, “and we still had a good time on the way home.”

The Lady Eagles will try to put this game behind them as they travel to Central on Friday, April 4th to face the Central Scarlet Dragons.
