Last season Tyrone and BG met at Mansion Park and provided one of the most entertaining high school games of the year, with Tyrone winning by one point on a last-second defensive goal line stop.
This year, BG returned the favor on Tyrone’s home field in another exciting back-and-forth matchup that ended 50-37. The game was closer than the final score appeared with only 7 points separating the two teams in the fourth quarter.
It was a high-scoring game featuring big plays by both teams. Tyrone quarterback Ashton Walk and BG quarterback Chase Kissell combined for 584 passing yards. The rushing attack was also effective for both teams rushing for 263 yards on the night.
Another interesting sub-plot of the game was Tyrone senior Trent Adams, who transferred from BG this year, facing his old team. Adams was prepared for the moment, and turned in a two-touchdown, 111-yard receiving performance that was only eclipsed by a monster performance by BG senior Hamilton Gates.
Early in the game, it looked like the Golden Eagles might be routed by the Marauders.
Tyrone’s first two drives resulted in an interception and a punt, and BG responded with two touchdown drives to go up 14-0 after one quarter.
In the first quarter, the Eagles could not get their passing game going. On the other side, BG’s run attack dominated the Eagle’s defense early. BG’s first drive consisted of seven plays, all on the ground.
Bishop Guilfoyle was led by receiver Hamilton Gates, who tallied 139 receiving yards, 29 rushing yards, and four touchdowns.
In the second quarter, Tyrone finally showed some life as they put on a solid drive down the field and capped it off with an Ashton Walk rushing touchdown.
The rest of the quarter was controlled by BG’s rushing attack that drove the Marauders down the field and chewed up a lot of clock.
With 29 seconds left to play in the half, BG quarterback Chase Kissel threw up a prayer to Gates, who came down with a spectacular catch over two Tyrone defenders to make the score 21-7 going into the half.
“They controlled the game with the run most of the first half, we knew that we had to stop the run if we wanted to make a comeback,” senior Dante Novak said.
The second half began with another Hamilton Gates touchdown to lengthen the Marauder’s lead to three scores.
The next two drives from each team would result in touchdowns and conclude the 3rd quarter with a 32-13 BG lead.
But Tyrone refused to fold in this game and made it interesting in the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Tyrone caught fire, scoring three touchdowns, whilling the Marauder lead down to 7 points with 6 minutes left to play.
But a pick-six for BG put the sword in Tyrone’s chest concluding the game 50-37.
“The fourth quarter showcased the potential that we have as a team, the rest of the season we’re going to focus on playing like that for the full four quarters of every game.” junior Lucas Bonsell said.
Although Tyrone is 2-4 at this point they have played great competition and have stayed in the game down to the wire in almost every game.
Tyrone will take on the winless Huntington Bearcats in Huntington on Friday, October 4th at 7pm.
