The Tyrone golf team scored a big upset win over Hollidaysburg at Mountain View Country Club this past Thursday, putting Tyrone in a tie with Hollidaysburg for the Mountain League title.

Tyrone defeated the talented Golden Tigers squad by just 1 stroke, 330-331. The top scorers for the Golden Eagles were RJ Royer, Cassidy Miksich, Cyrus Ahlert, and Sam Crilly.

“We had three players shoot career competition bests,” said Tyrone Head Coach Mike Funicelli. “Even the players who didn’t make the match should be commended for trying their best and pushing their teammates.”

Royer and Miksich led the Golden Eagles, both with an 81, followed by Ahlert with 82 and Crilly with 86 leading to a score of 330.

Hollidaysburg’s Weston Eberhart did not have his best performance of the year, carding an 85 and opening the door for the Tyrone upset.

“Going into the match, we knew we had a slim chance to beat them. It came down to the last score. Once we knew we beat them it became a confidence booster for the team moving into the postseason,” said Miksich.

The team bounced back after a loss to Hollidaysburg at Sinking Valley Country Club last Tuesday.

Funicelli gave credit to his team for putting in work both on the range and the course this past week.

“Between our last two Mountain League matches, we had five days to practice and prepare. Coach Miksich and I decided to really stress competition and have players go at it during practice. There were a lot of qualifying matches over those days and the team rose to the top as evidenced by our scores. I’m proud of our squad and proud to say we earned a share of the Mountain League title,” said Funicelli.

Tyrone’s next match will be Monday, September 12th at Sinking Valley Country Club against Altoona Area High School.

The standings for the Mountain League are as follows: Tyrone and Hollidaysburg (26-2); Huntingdon (18-10); Philipsburg-Osceola (17-11); Bellefonte (13-15); Clearfield (8-20); Bald Eagle Area (4-24).
