When Tyrone Head Coach Brad Kanuch took the Lady Eagles to the annual Lock Haven Invitational for the first time in 2020, no Tyrone girls placed, and the team finished dead last in scoring with zero points.
Just four years later, the Tyrone girls took first place overall, and the boys placed third.
“Winning the meet is a measure of how far the girls’ program has advanced since then,” Tyrone assistant coach Steve Everhart said.
Kanuch agrees. “I think the girls winning is awesome. It shows the strength of our team and how well-rounded we are. We may be a small team, but we get the job done,” Kanuch said.
The meet included 13 area schools: Central Mountain, Clearfield, DuBois, Hughesville, Mifflinburg, North Penn-Mansfield, Penns Valley, Sayre, South Williamsport, Troy, Tyrone, Warrior Run, and Williamsport.
First-place finishers for the Golden Eagles were Nicole Ramsey in the triple jump and Lola Woomer in the high jump for the girls, and the 4×400 boys relay of Aiden Detwiler, Dante Novak, Alex Brumbaugh, and Tom Sutt for the boys.
According to Kanuch and Everhart, other highlights of the meet were Kylie Nelson’s 121′ javelin throw, which is only 10′ shy of the school record, and the boys relay performances.
Everhart also singled out freshman Cam Coffey for hitting 5:00 with a double-digit drop in the 1600m. He also highlighted the 4x800m relay that took first against Hughesville, the top-ranked team in the state.
“Caleb Whitby’s 49-second leg of the 400m as a sophomore [was remarkable]. Only one other Tyrone athlete has pulled [that] off—state champion Nick Patton,” Everhart said.
Overall, both Kanuch and Everhart were pleased with the results from the Tyrone athletes.
“[This meet] brings out the best in our kids. Every year. Nearly every event. Maybe it’s the weather, the Friday night lights, the college-campus setting, the -for-everything food, the energized announcers, the creative bets Coach Kanuch makes if the kids hit a certain goal. It’s fun–and a measure of what we can accomplish,” Everhart said.
“Our kids always come to perform at the Bald Eagle Invite. I don’t know what it is, but the kids have a crazy energy about it and it is a meet they look forward to every year,” Kanuch said.
