Tyrone Girls Win First Ever District Title

Tyrone’s Reagan Irons, Chesney Saltsgiver, Natalie Saltsgiver, Mackenzie Latchford, Garin Hoy, and Jake Taylor all qualified for the State Championship Meet at Shippensburg University

The Tyrone girls track team made history at Mansion Park on Tuesday, May 18, winning the District 6 AA Girls Championship for the first time in school history.

Tyrone only brought 10 girls to the district championship meet, but the quality of those ten was enough to come out on top of the field of 28 AA teams.

“This is unbelievable,” Tyrone Head Coach Brad Kanuch told the Altoona Mirror. “I have never coached a group like this before. Seeing them compete against each other every single time, it’s every coach’s dream to have kids that want to compete against each other.”

Tyrone scored 76.5 points to take the team title. Penns Valley finished second, ten points behind Tyrone with a team score of 65.5, and Forest Hills was third with 65 points.

“[Our girls] were able to come out, compete and do their best. Today their best was better than every other team. Being able to go one and two in a couple of events and place in several others shows how good the girls are that we have. They are extremely versatile. We have girls that can sprint and jump and do relays. It’s amazing,” said Kanuch.

Mackenzie Latchford and Chesney Saltsgiver fought a hard race to finish first and second in the 100-meter dash. The teammates both finished with a time of 12.89 seconds, with Latchford being named the winner on a razor-thin photo finish.

“We have pushed each other all year, and we couldn’t do this without each other. It’s the best feeling,” said Latchford.

Saltsgiver got her place on the top of the podium in the long jump, finishing first and qualifying for states with a jump of 16-6.25.

Latchford also placed 1st in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.87, and 3rd place in the long jump with a jump of 16-4.25.

Latchford had an outstanding meet, qualifying for states in four events: the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter relay, and the long jump.

The girls 400-meter relay is also going to states, placing first overall. The team includes Reagan Irons, Chesney Saltsgiver, Natalie Saltsgiver, and Mackenzie Latchford.

Irons also placed third in the high jump with a jump of 5-0, allowing Irons to qualify for states.

Eliza Vance and Becca Lewis placed 6th and 7th in the 400-meter race.

On the boys side, Tyrone finished 14th as a team in a tough AA field.

Senior Jake Taylor was third in the pole vault with a jump of 12 feet and will compete at states.

DUe to scratches at the state meet, senior Garin Hoy will also run at states in the 3200-meter race with a fifth-place finish and a  district time of 10.19.58.

Senior Matt Brooks was fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.59.
