Tyrone Fails to Spoil Clearfield’s Senior Night with 0-1 Loss
Tyrone suffered a tough 0-1 loss against Clearfield during their senior night on Tuesday. A critical defensive error in the first minutes of the game gave the Bison an early lead and sank Tyrone’s offensive ship making it difficult for the Golden Eagles to gain any momentum for a meaningful counter attack.
Tyrone started off the game on the wrong foot. Due to a defensive miscue, a Clearfield striker got a one on one opportunity with Tyrone’s keeper junior Issac Woomer. Shortly after stealing the ball he knocked the ball into the far left corner, a difficult shot to save.
Tyrone struggled the rest of the half failing to create anything on offense and often making predictable passes easily picked off by the Clearfield defense-men and midfielders. On the other hand Tyrone’s defense, led by captain Ryan Vance, stood strong and made consistent stops against Clearfield’s offense and kept the score 0-1 to end the first half.
To begin the second half it was much of the similar back and forth play. Both offenses failed to create meaningful attack; due to quickly being snuffed out by the opposing defenses. As the half went on Tyrone began to pick up the pace offensively. Habitual goal scorer Corey Johnston was targeted often but excellent play from the Clearfield midfield and defense stomped out any chance for a goal. However, Tyrone did not let up.
Desperation quickly set in for Tyrone culminating in the final five minutes. In these final minutes, Tyrone picked up the pace. A relentless attack bombarded the Clearfield defense at every opportunity. With seconds left in the game, Tyrone was awarded a free kick directly in front of the goal, the perfect opportunity for an equalizing goal. Captain Blake Johnston quickly fired off the kick and a rush for the ball erupted as it knocked off the near post. In the madness Clearfield’s goalkeeper got a hand on the ball but slipped out and rolled past the end line, awarding Tyrone a corner. With the time running down Tyrone rushed the corner ending in a poor chance for a goal. After the loss, Tyrone’s record within the mountain league stands at 6-3-2 and 6-6-2 overall.
