Tyrone Boys Soccer faced Cambria Heights (8-3-2) in its first Saturday matchup of the season. Both teams entered the game with winning records, but Tyrone took home the win 3-2.
“Overall, we played a complete game. We needed to win this game, and we did with good defense and good attacking,” said forward Gavin Tuskovich.
Right off the starting whistle, the Tyrone boys were hot out of the gates, and they immediately registered a shot on target.
Five minutes into the game, Cambria Heights took the early 1-0 lead off a corner kick.
Three minutes later, Tyrone drew a foul within the Cambria Heights 18, and Tyrone’s Grant Miller placed the penalty kick in the bottom right for the tying goal.
Tyrone continued to control the game in both possession and aggression perspectives.
Tyrone held 66.6% of possession throughout the game. Cambria Heights only had a small percentage of 33.4%. A clear sign of domination.
Cambria Heights responded with a deep shot from 30 yards out, resulting in another goal, and the Eagles were down 2-1.
After halftime, the Golden Eagles drew another foul just outside the top left of the 18. Tyrone’s Tytus Novak placed the free kick around the right side of the Cambria Heights wall, where Cam Nelson found the back of the net to tie the game at 2.
The Golden Eagles continued to register shots and kept the ball in the Cambria Heights end. Tyrone was awarded a corner kick around 25 minutes. Bellwood’s Noah Gulvas crossed the ball into the box, where both teams scrambled. A half volley presented itself in front of Novak, which he was able to bury in the back of the net for the 3-2 lead.
The Golden Eagles held out the rest of the game, and took home their ninth win of the season, improving to 9-4.
Penns Valley
Tyrone fought hard but couldn’t get a good result against the Penns Valley Rams, losing 2-0.
Field conditions were a challenge and the Eagles were pressed into a defensive mode from the opening kick.
The Eagles were able to repel the Rams chances, but could not break through the Rams defense, only having a couple of shots in the first half.
Heading into halftime, the Eagles knew they needed to attack the Rams defense to break the scoreless stalemate.
Howwever, minutes into the second half, the Rams get a throw-in deep into the Eagles half. The Eagles couldn’t handle the Rams throw-in, and the Rams were 1-0 up minutes into the second half.
“I think we played well; we just made some fatal mistakes when they were taking throw-ins. We were the better team; we just need to work on some things and focus on the games we will play, not dwell on the past games,” said sophomore Griffin Warren.
Fifteen minutes later the Penns Valley Rams doubled their lead to 2-0 against the Tyrone Golden Eagles.
As time ran out, the Golden Eagles couldn’t find any goals to make the game closer and lost 2-0 to the Penns Valley Rams.
Tyrone now stands at 9-5.
