Eli Woomer and Carter Price combined for a dominant 5-1 win as they shut down the Bearcats’ hitting attack on Monday, April 14.
Backed by the Golden Eagle defense, Huntington was only able to score one run in the contest because of diving stops made by Lincoln Shirey, Brayden Parsons, and Brandon McClure.
“We played really well in the field and were able to take some guys out of scoring position by making tough plays,” senior Dylan McKinney said.
Huntington’s Brock Bryson pitched a solid game as he went the distance, throwing 104 pitches. Bryson threw in the mid-80s and it took the Golden Eagles a couple of innings to catch up to his speed.
In the top of the third inning, Tyrone was able to get a couple of baserunners on with a Landon Hamer single and a Gayge Miller double both into right field. Ashton Walk came up clutch with a single into right field that scored both runners and gave Tyrone the 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Lincoln Shirey tallied a hit with a ground ball that snuck through the infield. He then stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on another passed ball where pitcher Brock Bryson failed to cover home for the catcher.
Eli Woomer’s day ended for the Golden Eagles after the 4th inning. He got himself into tough spots with walks but was able to utilize his defense to get himself out of innings.
Carter Price came in and threw the rest of the game, and continued Tyrone’s dominance. He only gave up 3 hits and 1 run in his appearance.
Tyrone’s offense started to slow down and struggled to find baserunners after they took a 4-run lead in the 5th inning. Bryson struck out nine Golden Eagles in his appearance and mostly shut them down.
“We were able to get the bats going early on in the game, it would’ve been nice to add a few more runs on the board, but we got the job done”, said junior Brayden Parsons.
Ultimately, Tyrone came out of Huntington with a big win over the 5-1 Bearcats, improving their record to 7-4.
The Golden Eagles will take on the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders on Wednesday, 4/16 at Home at 4:30.
