Tyrone defeats Penns Valley 41-21 on Homecoming at Gray Field
The Tyrone Golden Eagles cruised past Penn’s Valley for a 41-21 victory on a cold and rainy homecoming night at Gray Field on October 25.
The game started out close with the Eagles and the Rams trading touchdowns for a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter.
“Penns Valley came out tough,” said Tyrone head coach Steve Guthoff.
But in the second quarter quarterback Erik Wagner and tailback James Oliver took over, each scoring two touchdowns to quickly put the game out of reach for the visitors.
Wagner had a solid passing game going 9-13 for 153 yards with two touchdowns, one to Nick Getz, and the other to Aleic Hunter.
“Erik is making good decisions and executing the plays well,” said coach Guthoff, “The offensive line also provided good pass protection.”
Oliver, who is the area’s leading rusher, had 22 carries for 194 yards and three touchdowns to help secure the victory. “We have talented running backs, and we take what the opposing defense gives us,” said Gutoff.
“[Erik Wagner and James Oliver] really complement each other,” said head coach Steve Guthoff.
The defense also played another great game, holding Penns Valley to only 21 points. Defensive end Duane Boone protected the end zone to save a touchdown.
“The end zone is like my home, I protect it and don’t let any strangers in,” said Boone about his touchdown saving play.
The Eagles will go on the road to face Johnstown next week.
“Johnstown is another team that is better than what the record shows,” said Gutoff, “They still have explosive, dangerous players we have to prepare for.”
