After a successful 13-9 season last year, Tyrone started this season with a 79-32 bang against local rival Bellwood. This is the Eagles second consecutive year that Tyrone has beat Bellwood by at least 45 points.

Friday’s game started out slow for both teams. Bellwood battled hard to keep the score close for the first quarter and a half, but Tyrone’s lock-down defense and explosive offense was no match for a young Bellwood team that lost three senior starters from last season.

Halfway into the second quarter, The powerhouse trio of Damon Gripp, Brandon Lucas, and Landen DeHaas took over the game, scoring a combined 64 points.

The third quarter started out just as strong as the ending of the third, when Tyrone went on a 19-0 run which was finally broken up with 46 seconds left in the quarter.

“The run gave us momentum, and got our energy up, and our shots started falling,” said Junior Damon Gripp.

The pace slowed considerably in the fourth quarter with Tyrone scoring 13 and Bellwood 7. Tyrone ran down the clock by keeping possession of the ball and continuing to control the game.

Tyrone is back on the court today at Bellefonte, where they will try to dominate the Red Raiders as they did the Blue Devils.
