The Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to three games on Monday, April 21st, completing a season sweep of the historically strong Mount Union Trojans.
Led by standout performances from Ashton Walk, Gayge Miller, Landon Hamer, and Lincoln Shirey, the Eagles beat the Trojans 8-3, carrying significant momentum into the second stretch of their schedule.
The win also snapped Mount Union’s four-game winning streak, dropping the Trojans to 9-4. Tyrone improved to 8-4 on the season.
After defeating Mount Union 7-2 in their previous meeting, the Golden Eagles knew not to take their opponent lightly, especially with the Trojans entering the game boasting a strong 9-3 record.
“Even though we beat them by a lot last time, we didn’t want to take them lightly because they are a very capable team with great hitting,” said junior Owen Oakes.
Landon Hamer also commented on the team’s mindset before the game. “We are 0-0 going into every game from here on out. Our goal is to be 1-0 after every meeting,” Hamer said.
With this focus on the present, the Eagles managed to string together twelve hits and secure the win, thanks in part to solid pitching from Eli Woomer and Carter Price.
Tyrone started off strong with a leadoff triple from Landon Hamer, who was driven in by a fielder’s choice groundout from Gayge Miller, giving Miller his first of three RBIs in the game.
With strong pitching from Woomer in the first and second innings, and deep fly balls tracked down by Brayden Parsons and Gayge Miller, the Eagles entered the bottom of the second with a 1-0 lead.
Not satisfied with the narrow lead, Tyrone’s offense erupted in the second inning, adding five more runs, a crucial cushion as the game progressed.
Offensive contributions came from nearly every starter, with multi-hit games from Hamer, Walk, and Shirey.
The Eagles faced some adversity in the top of the third, as the Trojans responded with two runs of their own. However, Woomer was able to work out of the jam and limit the damage.
Key hits continued to play a role in the victory. Oakes’ RBI double in the fifth inning with two outs provided an insurance run, helping to put Mount Union away for good.
Eli Woomer pitched three solid innings, allowing only two runs and stranding several runners on base.
Sophomore Carter Price took over in the fourth with a 7-2 lead and finished the final four innings, allowing just one run to secure the win.
The Eagles now look ahead to Tuesday, April 22, when they face cross-town rival Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils in the annual “backyard brawl.”
Bellwood enters the contest with a 4-5 record after a narrow 2-1 loss to Bald Eagle. Tyrone aims to maintain their “1-0” mentality and not overlook any opponent as they continue their push through the season.
