After a dominating 10-5 win over Greater Johnstown on September 26th, the Golden Eagles were looking to carry their 3-game win streak into their next homestand.
This week, the Golden Eagles’ 3-game homestand consisted of favorable matchups against Clearfield, Bishop Guilfoyle, and Cambria Heights finishing 1-1-1 on the week and advancing them to 7-6-1 on the season.
Clearfield 3, Tyrone 3
The Golden Eagles tied the Clearfield Bison 3-3 after double overtime on September 30.
The Clearfield Bison is a solid program with the same record as the Eagles at 6-5 going into this contest.
The Eagles started the game off scorching hot with 2 goals in the first half scored by forwards, Ned Smearman and Jake Baker all while holding the Bison to a first-half shutout.
Both goals were assisted by sophomore midfielder, Tytus Novak.
Going into the second half, the Eagles were looking to continue holding the Bison and possibly get a few more insurance goals.
Tyrone junior, Rowan Moore, gave the Eagles another goal assisted by Ned Smearman to extend their lead to three.
It looked as though the Golden Eagles were going to walk away from this game with the 3-0 shutout with around 7 minutes left on the clock.
This was until the Bison acquired their first goal and put themselves on the board.
All it took was one goal to build the Bison’s confidence and give them hope as they proceeded to score two more goals within 5 minutes after their first.
These late minute goals by the Bison were enough to extend the matchup into overtime.
The first overtime went scoreless for either team and the second overtime was identical, conceding the game in a 3-3 draw.
“We fought hard the whole game and got a comfortable lead, unfortunately, we got too comfortable and allowed them to come back,” said junior Rowan Moore.
Tyrone 4, Bishop Guilfoyle 0
After the draw on Monday, the Golden Eagles looked ahead to the next game and got a 4-0 win against the BG Marauders.
BG sat at a disastrous 1-11 record when entering this contest and would leave with a 1-12 record.
The Golden Eagles played a one-sided contest as their offense put up 24 shots on goal with 4 goals and the defense allowed 0 shots on goal.
“The defense held the outside and the middle very well. The offensive pressure also helped us hold BG to zero shots,” said defender Caleb Posnett.
Tyrone applied good pressure to the BG defense, also having the majority of the possession time.
This made sure that BG couldn’t get any good looks or get shots off.
This marked goalkeeper Wyatt Walls’ 3rd shut-out of the season.
“I more or less just lock in and listen to music and start my pre-game routine. Before the game, I pray for safety and a good game. Doing all of this prepares me for our games and allows me to get these shutouts when done well,” said goalkeeper Wyatt Walls.
Although defense might win championships, the Eagles still put up a multi-goal performance to ensure the win.
The Eagles were only leading 1-0 going into halftime after an early goal scored by Tytus Novak, assisted by a Jake Baker cross to the middle.
The second half was much better as Ned Smearman added 2 goals, one assisted by Noah Gulvas and one unassisted, and Noah Gulvas added another unassisted goal.
Cambria Heights 3, Tyrone 0
The Eagles had a quick turnaround to play Cambria Heights (8-4) on Saturday after their well-deserved win over BG on Thursday.
Sadly, the Golden Eagles took a 3-0 loss to the Highlanders.
The Eagles didn’t play a great game which could be related to how many games they played in a short span of time and on how early the game was with a 10:00 am kickoff.
However, excuses mean nothing in high school soccer as every game matters for the playoff push and the opposing team plays in the same conditions.
The Highlanders came right out of the gate with a lighting fast goal in the 6th minute.
The rest of the first half was a dogfight but led to no scores.
The second half started much like the first with a quick goal by the Highlanders.
“Once [Cambria Heights] scored their 2nd goal, our heads dropped and our attitude was poor. That’s what cost us the game,” said sophomore Tytus Novak.
The Highlanders scored one more before the end of the match concluding the game with a 3-0 loss for the Eagles.
The Eagles hope to do well this coming week and make a push for playoffs.
Up next are the Central Dragons (0-12) and the Bald Eagle Area Eagles (4-6-2) for Tyrone’s senior night.
