Despite an 0-3 start, the Tyrone Boys Soccer 2023-2024 soccer season is looking up. With ten players returning, the team is much deeper and more competitive than in previous years.
Bald Eagle 3, Tyrone 2
Tyrone just hosted their season-opener home game against Bald Eagle on Tuesday, August 29th. While they did fall short, losing 3-2, the Golden Eagles gave the Eagles a run for their money.
At the start of the game Tyrone maintained much of the possession, but the score stayed 0-0 due to very good defending from Bald Eagle.
As the middle of the first half approached, Bald Eagle made a good play down the right side, challenging Tyrone’s defense. The Bald Eagles were able to get a cross in and on the other end of it was an offensive player on the other team. This resulted in a goal making the score 1-0.
However, the Golden Eagles answered back with an offensive attack, with senior captain Rocky Romani racing down the right side, passing two outside defenders. Romani drove the ball down to the corner of the field, crossed, and freshman Grant Miller was there waiting for it. Miller buried it in the back of the net, scoring his first varsity goal.
This was good for the Tyrone players mentally because it reminded them that they were still in the game.
The dogfight continued between the two opposing teams until, with about seven minutes left in the first half, an Eagle defender fouled one of Tyrone’s offensive players inside the 18 yard box. Thus, Tyrone was awarded with a penalty kick.
Romani was called to the occasion since Tyrone had finally gotten the opportunity they worked hard for.
The pressure was on Romani to give Tyrone the lead they needed, but that pressure didn’t stand a chance as the Captain put the ball in the back of the net.
Play continued on, until halftime where Tyrone was on top with a score of 2-1.
Bellefonte 9, Tyrone 0
Tyrone Boys soccer had its first game on the road, and it ended in a tough loss. Bellefonte is one of the top-ranked teams in the conference.
The game had a rough start, with Bellefonte scoring a goal in the first 5 minutes. It was downhill from there, as Bellefonte kept piling on the goals and Tyrone was struggling on both offense and defense.
The score was 6-0 in the first half, and Tyrone knew that they needed to change, and came out stronger in the second half. They were able to hold Bellefonte’s tough offensive attacks and only gave up 3 goals.
Bedford 10, Tyrone 0
Tyrone took a tough loss at home, playing last year’s Laurel Highlands Champions: Bedford.
Tyrone was in an uphill battle all game, and let up 5 goals in the first half. 3 out of those 5 goals were tap-ins.
Bedford managed to create passing triangles all over the field, which proved to be debilitating to the Tyrone defense.
Bedford scored another 5 goals in the second half, continually using their simple passing philosophy and many substitutions.
