Tyrone Boys Soccer Kicks Off 2017 Season 2-0

Tyrone Boys Varsity Soccer won a pair of high scoring games to start the 2017 season 2-0.

On Wednesday, Tyrone beat Philipsburg 4-3 despite poor field conditions.

On Saturday, Tyrone built an early lead but had to stop a Central comeback in a  5-4 overtime win in their first home game of the year.

Tyrone 4 – Philipsburg 3

Tyrone’s offensive assault started right out of the gate. Eight minutes into the match Andrew Pearson ripped a shot on net that rebounded to sophomore Corey Johnston who chipped the ball past the distracted Philipsburg keeper.

The second goal saw Pearson and Johnston’s roles reversed with Pearson scoring on a one-two pass combination at the top of the 18.

Shortly after Philipsburg scored their first goal of the game on a corner which dropped past Tyrone keeper Issac Woomer for a back post shot. The score was 2-1 after the end of the first half.

The Pearson and Johnston struck once again to begin the second half. Corey Johnston was able to clean up an Andrew Pearson shot which froze in one of the many puddles littered throughout the field.

Around ten minutes later Philipsburg scored on a shot outside the 18 which slipped through Junior Keeper Issac Woomer’s gloves.

Freshman Alex Taylor scored Tyrone’s fourth goal of the game with a left-footed shot on a perfectly placed through ball by Corey Johnston.

To end the game Philipsburg scored on a penalty shot to make the final score 4-3 in favor of Tyrone.

Tyrone 5 – Central 4

“I was happy to contribute to the team in a big way and secure the win,” said sophomore Corey Johnston whose hat-trick and overtime goal helped overcome a Central comeback attempt.

Tyrone struck first in the 21st minute with a goal by sophomore Corey Johnston made possible with a give and go pass by Andrew Pearson.

Shortly after central fired back with a through ball goal of their own making the score 1-1.

Tyrone answered back with two quick goals by freshman Alex Taylor and  sophomore Corbin Nale, Corey Johnston earning the assist on the second goal and Andrew Pearson with the assist on the third. Tyrone led 3-1 to end the half.

Mid-way through the second half Central completed their comeback and took the lead leaving the score at 4-3. The first goal came off a corner which was headed into the back of the net. The second goal came off a rip outside the 18 and the third off a one on one chance against the Tyrone keeper.

Ten minutes later sophomore Andrew Pearson was fouled inside the box on the run which awarded Tyrone a penalty shot. The shot was taken and scored by Corey Johnston. At the end of regular time the score was tied 4-4.

Coming out of the intermission Tyrone quickly found their offensive groove. Senior Asher Christine found Corey Johnston on an inside run who was able to guide the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. The final score was 5-4.
