Tyrone Boys soccer earned their second win of the week on September 28th against Greater Johnstown. It was also youth night for the Golden Eagles, so the pressure to perform well in front of a large crowd of future Tyrone soccer stars.
Coming off of a 1-0 win against Bishop Carroll the boys had a positive mindset going into the game.
The game started strong with Tyrone maintaining possession for most of the first half. All of this passing and control of the game led to the inevitable first goal, thanks to freshman forward Noah Gulvus.
As the play continued, Tyrone put another one on the board due to a foul on a Tyrone player right outside the 30-yard line.
Senior Captain Rocky Romani was called on to take the kick. Romani hit a powerful shot with a curve that made the ball hit the right side of the net, too tough for the keeper to save.
Up 2-0, the momentum was strong in Tyrone’s favor. In addition to their high team spirit, the boys also felt the crowd’s energy, which was the largest crowd of the season.
Tyrone kept the wheels rolling with a third goal courtesy of senior Conner Bardell and assisted by junior Jake Baker. The beautiful play consisted of Baker darting down the right side, passing two defenders, and crossing the ball into the 6-yard box. On the receiving end of the cross was Bardell, who used his athleticism to head the ball into the net.
With Tyrone still controlling most of the game, Johnstown was able to capitalize on some of the Golden Eagles’ mistakes.
Fortunately for the Eagles, Gulvus wasn’t done with the Trojans just yet. He dribbled up the middle and cut to the left side, burying another ball into the back of the net.
However, the Trojans soon took advantage of a mistake from Tyrone’s defense and scored. The half ended 4-1.
Getting back on the field the Eagles had to keep their heads on straight. Although they were up 4-1, they kept a 0-0 mentality.
Possession remained in Tyrone’s hands in the second half and Tyrone managed to put another goal on the board.
Sophomore forward Ethan Donofrio scored his first goal for Tyrone.
Romani got the ball in the midfield, dribbled through a Trojan player, and found Donofrio at about the 25-yard line. Donofrio takes a touch and launches it over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net.
The game ended in a 5-1 victory for the Golden Eagles. There’s no doubt that this was a good step forward for Tyrone. They played as a team and came out on top.
