Tyrone Boys Basketball defeats Mounties 72-34
Politza, Soellner and Meredith all score double digits in the win over the Mounties
Tyrone boys basketball won a one sided affair at Phillipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles crushed the Mounties 72-34, improving their record 1-1 on the season.
The first quarter was a close one with the Eagles out scoring P-O 16-14. That would slowly wear off as the Eagles started pulling ahead by more than doubling the Mounties score in the 2nd quarter 17-7.
“Our team came out slow, but really picked it up after the first quarter,” said senior guard Zack Soellner.
Nine of Tyrone’s 33 points in the first half came from Jake Meredith hitting threes from beyond the arc.
The half ended with Tyrone up 33-21.
The Eagles picked up right where they left off after the break, outscoring the Mounties 39-13 in the second half.
Tyrone Big man Anthony Politza scored 6 buckets from down low and went 9-9 at the line scoring a total of 21 points.
“Other than the beginning quarter we dictated the style of basketball we wanted which led to easy shots and inflated our lead,” said Politza.
The Eagles defense managed to not let any Mounties player score double digits while Politza, Soellner and Meredith all scored double digits. The Mounties Michael Durlin was the closest with 9 total points scored.
“I think we played really solid man defense in the second half and that was really the whole game,” said Head Coach George Gripp.
The Eagles have a non- conference rivalry game against Tussey Mountain at home Saturday night. Tip-off is at 7:30.
