Tyrone’s varsity Bocce Team participated in its first invitational tournament at St. Francis University on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
There were ten schools at the tournament including teams from Tyrone, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Central, Windber, Johnstown, and Altoona.
“Saturday was a great learning experience because they got to play different teams with different skill levels,” Head Coach Sarah Latchford said.
“The team had a lot of time to learn different techniques and time to get better,” assistant coach Shannon Davis said.
Tyrone went 1-1-1 on the day. In the first match, the Golden Eagles beat the Penn Cambria B team.
The Golden Eagles were very consistent in their first game, scoring 8 points to Penn Cambria’s 2.
They lost to Windber in a golden frame 6-7 in the second match.
Tyrone was down for most of the game but scored three points to tie the match with one second left, forcing the overtime period.
The only match that didn’t go well for the Tyrone team was the last match, in which they lost 11-0 to Greater Johnstown.
“One of the things that hurt us at the tournament was that they lost their focus and when they were down big they lost all their spirit,” assistant coach Katie Coltabaugh said.
Tyrone’s next match will be at Bellwood on Wednesday.
