Tyrone Baseball Opens Season with 12 Inning No Decision
The game was called after 12 innings due to darkness
Tyrone varsity baseball opened their season against Bald Eagle on Monday with…a no-decision.
Instead of a win or a loss, fans were treated to a 12-inning opening-day battle that was suspended due to darkness and will be completed when the teams meet again on April 20 at Tyrone.
Junior AJ Coleman got the opening day start for Tyrone, pitching the first two innings and only allowing one run. However, Coleman had to exit the game early when his pitch count hit 64 in just two frames.
Senior Ross Gampe then took the mound for the next five innings, allowing two runs, as Bald Eagle took a 3-0 lead at the end of the third.
Tyrone’s offense came alive in the 5th with Caiden Bonsell and Ryan Light both getting on base and scoring on passed balls, and Ashton Walk scoring on a fielder’s choice, tying the score at 3.
After the 5th inning, the game became a pitcher’s duel, with both teams putting up flawless innings. Caiden Bonsell came in the 8th for Tyrone, continuing the trend of three up, three down, in back-to-back innings.
This trend continued until the top of the 12th when Bradon Mcclure singled, then scored from second with two outs on a clutch single from AJ Coleman, to put Tyrone up 4-3.
However, Tyrone didn’t stop there, with Coleman scoring on a single from Ross Gampe to put Tyrone up by two, making the score 5-3.
Going into the bottom of the 12th, hopes were high that Tyrone would get their first win of the season, with Landon Postreich taking the hill.
Bald Eagle however, had other plans, with C. Watkins, their center fielder, reaching on an infield error to start the inning, and Bald Eagle’s shortstop, K. Burns, reaching base and both players scoring, knotting the game at 5. Postriech would finish the inning with a strikeout and help from his defense.
When asked about the game, head Coach Kevin Sollener said, “We have a good core returning this year, and we showed some promising defense and pitching. We’ll have a good year as long as we get our bats going.”
