With winter fast approaching the Tyrone Art Department and PennDot teamed up for the second annual “Paint the Plow,” outreach project to promote winter safety.

Students in several counties were invited to design and paint a winter safety theme, using a PennDot snow plow as their canvas.  The decorated plow will run in the areas of each school district this winter.

PennDot has also made this project into a competition in which the public can vote for their favorite entry on Facebook.  The plow with the most likes will be crowned the winner.

“I think the project is a great opportunity for students to work together using diverse skills toward a common creative goal. Then to have the satisfaction of seeing the results of that work on public display as it serves the community in which they live,” said TAHS art teacher Eric Feather.

To promote winter safety The Tyrone Art Department came up with the slogan “Eyes On The Road” to remind drivers to always be paying attention when behind the wheel.

The project was started by Cambria County PennDOT Manager Jeff Mitchell after he saw the idea on the Ohio Department of Transportation Facebook page. He thought it would be a great outreach program to try.

The Tyrone art students had fun with the project and look forward to seeing their plow out on the road this winter

“It felt good to be a part of a group project and working as a team,” said Makayla Mccloskey.

The project has twenty eight different school districts painting thirty snow plows and will not only promote winter safety but showcase the talents of students in our area.
