A Tyrone alum with a strong background in business and athletics has put his roots back in the community and is making a difference for local student-athletes and adults.
In 2013 Nick Getz won his first Eagle Eye Athlete of the Week award for his 31 receptions and 602 receiving yards for the Golden Eagle football team that year.
Getz was a three-sport athlete in high school, set a school record in the 100-meter dash, and earned three more awards from the Eagle Eye in football, wrestling, and track and field.
Nick graduated in 2015 and took his athletic talent to the Washington & Jefferson College football program. He played at W & J for four years where he racked up 174 career tackles, four fumble recoveries, and even a game-winning defensive touchdown on a scoop and score.
Getz earned multiple awards including All-PAC first and second team, PAC Defensive Player of the Week, and PAC academic honor roll.
He graduated from Washington and Jefferson in 2019 with a degree in economics and took a corporate job for Bank of America.
After college Getz also started training athletes in his spare time. For several years he built his athletic training resume as a side job while working full-time at Bank of America.
“It’s something I enjoyed throughout college and I dabbled in it as a part-time job in my home gym,” said Getz.
But as Getz’s clients started spreading the word about his talent as a trainer, his business began to grow. Soon he was writing personalized workouts for his clients and eventually looked for a more permanent home for his growing business.
Like many, the COVID pandemic had Getz reassessing his career goals and he began to spend more time on his passion for athletic training.
“COVID hit soon after and pushed me down the path to start training and it has spiraled into what is today,” Getz said.
Getz moved from his home gym to a much larger space, first to a location behind the Tyrone Paper Mill, then to its current location in downtown Tyrone. Getz now trains clients from the age of ten to adults over 60.
Getz has trained several local collegiate athletes including University of Cincinnati baseball player and Tyrone alum Rodney Shultz and Pitt Johnstown baseball player and Tyrone alum Aiden Colemen. Getz has also trained recent Tyrone graduates Brady Ronan (Bloomsburg University) and Braden Ewing (Brown University).
One of Getz’s current clients from Tyrone Area High School is senior baseball player Dylan Ewing.
Ewing has been very pleased with his progress so far with Getz.
“I’ve gotten stronger and faster with Nick. I feel physically better and all of my attributes have improved since I’ve started lifting with Nick,” Ewing said.
Getz said his average price is $15 per session, depending on the number of days the client trains.
The gym is located at 1015 Pennsylvania Avenue in Tyrone and offers individual, group, athletic, and adult training sessions. Find out more at 814-327-1442 or email to [email protected].
