Community service provides an opportunity for individuals to give back without expecting payment in return.
On Tyrone Area High School’s annual Community Service Day, Tyrone Area Ag Program students visited the Cedarwood Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, students volunteered their time to engage with residents and improve the facility’s surroundings.
“This selfless decision reflects their strong values and commitment to civic engagement,” said Tyrone Area FFA Advisor Tiffany Hoy. “Furthermore, they walked to and from the project location without expressing any complaints, showcasing their resilience and dedication. I feel privileged to collaborate with such exceptional young leaders, who exemplify outstanding citizenship and community spirit.”
In the morning, students joined residents for a lively game of bingo, assisting in setting up the game and calling out numbers. In another room, they fostered a warm and friendly atmosphere by coloring and solving puzzles together.
Outside, students took the initiative to sweep the sidewalks, receiving compliments from passersby who appreciated their efforts in beautifying the facility.
A group of students helped pull weeds, rake leaves, and used gloves to pick up trash found around the property.
“It’s amazing how much debris and trash can build up over the winter months. We chose to make a positive impact by working to clean up the gardens and grounds,” freshman Coltyn Frye said.
In the afternoon, the group focused on cleaning up fallen tree branches and sticks from a large tree behind the building and pulled weeds from the flower gardens.
Students also organized and cleaned the deck, creating a welcoming space for residents to enjoy during the warm spring and summer months.
Twenty-nine members from the Tyrone Area FFA Chapter participated in this meaningful event, contributing an impressive 168 hours of community service.
Sophomore Aubrey Biter expressed her enthusiasm for the event.
“I like going to Cedarwood to make a positive impact on the residents’ day. I enjoy helping them make crafts and play bingo,” Biter said.
Tyrone Area FFA Advisor and Ag Educator Tiffany Hoy looked back on the student’s hardwork and dedication.
“I am immensely proud of our FFA members for dedicating their day to volunteerism. Despite the chilly weather, they worked cohesively. It is commendable that these students chose to invest their time in serving the community rather than attending the Spring Fling event at school with their peers,” Hoy said.
