Two TAHS Alumni Recording and Touring as ‘Into the Storm’
TAHS alumni Nathan Sechrist and Jon Wafa are two halves of the Tyrone based metal band Into The Storm. The pair has been on the Central PA music scene for several years and has a summer tour planned for this July. They also hope to release a full album near the end of 2017.
According to drummer Sechrist, their music is fast and loud, but somewhat hard to define. “You can’t really call us any particular genre. We are a mix of metalcore, alternative, nu-metal, hip hop, grunge, and progressive metal,” said Sechrist. “My influences rage from Limp Bizkit, August Burns Red, As Blood Runs Black, Hatebreed, Lamb of God, Deftones, Korn, (Hed) PE, Killswitch Engage, and eTown Concrete.”
“I’m influenced by Slipknot, Korn, Killswitch Engage, Godsmack, Tool, Pantera, Parkway Drive, Lynyrd Skynyrd, All That Remains, On Solid Ground, As Blood Runs Black, and Stone Sour,” said guitarist Wafa.
Sechrist said his interest in the local music scene goes as far back as his time at Tyrone High School. In fact, Sechrist wrote a regular column on the local music for the Eagle Eye while in high school.
“I started [playing] when I was 15 as a solo project called Broken or something like that. I soon changed the name to Into The Storm and found my guitarist/vocalist Jon a year or two later. Since we have been playing as a two piece to this day,” said Sechrist.
“I saw this local band named Sylex at a friend’s party. I instantly fell in love with the whole aspect of playing in a band and knew I had to start a band of my own,” said Sechrist.
“I’ve always had a passion for music. I bought my first guitar at 10, but took it back soon after. After some time, I picked a guitar back up and was determined to learn,” said Wafa.
The pair has recorded several songs and hopes to do more recording in the near future.
As for favorite tracks, each half of the duo has his favorite.
“I like Movement because it’s such a diverse song with the guitar riffs I play,” said Wafa.
“I would say “Lost” [is my favorite] because it was the first track we recorded and released when we first started playing together. We room recorded it with this beat up Guitar Hero mic,” said Sechrist.
