The Tyrone Golden Eagles boys and girls varsity soccer teams played a back-to-back boys and girls doubleheader at the Tyrone soccer complex and swept the Bishop Carroll Huskies on Tuesday, September 24.
The boys won in a close 2-1 game to extend their win streak to two, and the girls’ team won 4-0 to get back into the win column.
Boys: Tyrone 2, Bishop Carroll 1
After the impressive win on Saturday against the Penn Cambria Panthers, the Eagles presented new hope and proved they could beat anyone on any given day.
The Eagles were looking to keep this momentum into the upcoming weeks ahead as they started the week with the last game in their homestand against the 4-4-2 Bishop Carroll Huskies.
The Eagles led the Huskies in every stat from possession percentage and shots to successful passes.
Even though the Eagles dominated the game on the stat sheet, the Huskies were leading the game at half 1-0.
The Eagles got themselves on the board in the 2nd half with a goal from sophomore defender Grant Miller assisted by freshman Gavin Tuskovich.
The rest of the 2nd half was slow, and even though the Eagles were getting an abundance of good looks and continuing to lead the stat sheet, they couldn’t seem to get one into the back of the net.
This was until sophomore Ned Smearman scored the game-winning goal at the 8:09 mark assisted by Noah Gulvas.
Tyrone’s defense held the Huskies the rest of the game, ensuring that the Eagles came out on top 2-1.
This win improves the Eagle’s record to 5-5 (.500) marking the first time in the past 9 seasons achieving a .500 win percentage at the end of the first half of the season (10 games).
“It’s a huge accomplishment for the program. All the credit goes to the boys on this team. Our resiliency, attitude, and culture are the reasons for our success. This is a program-wide accomplishment and the future is brighter than ever,” said Head Coach Alex Bartlett on this statistic.
The boys look to keep their foot on the gas facing off against the Greater Johnstown Trojans (1-9) this Thursday, September 26th.
A win over Johnstown would advance the boy’s win streak to 3 and push them above .500 once again.
Girls: Tyrone 4, Bishop Carroll 0
After the boy’s game, the Lady Eagles completed the sweep of Bishop Carroll with a dominating 4-0 win.
Carroll had many attempts at goal in the first half, but sophomore Pyper Sparklin stopped them all.
There were many good passes throughout the game and communication between the Lady Eagles has improved.
“The team works really well together. With the guidance of our coaches, we have really come together as a unit this season. No matter whether we win or lose, our drive to succeed grows enormously,” junior Piper Myers said.
With 18 minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman Kadence Berry kicked a shot right inside the 18, resulting in the game’s first goal.
With 4 minutes remaining in the first half, senior Briley Campbell made a goal from right outside the 18.
With 7.6 seconds remaining in the first half, sophomore Maya Plummer made a shot right outside of the small box around the goalkeeper, leaving the score 3-0 in the first half.
In the second half, Tyrone had many shots on goal. Around 15 minutes left in the second half Bishop made a shot that almost was a goal, but goalkeeper Sparklin stopped the ball.
Freshman Olivia Newlin made a goal with 14 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the second half from right outside the 18.
Sparklin had many saves throughout the game and sophomore Sarah Chichester was a great defender, helping stop the ball from getting too close to the goal.
