The Scoop: Golden Eagles playing ‘Team Ball’
Friday’s matchup against Bald Eagle will be another big test for the high flying Golden Eagles of Tyrone
The Tyrone Golden Eagle basketball team continues to amaze. Their unselfish brand of team basketball is something special. In nine games, they have had five different scoring leaders.
Not to mention that they have also won eigth of those games, which has led to an impressive 8-1 start to the season. Compared to last year with standout guard and 1000 point scorer Brandon Gripp, the Golden Eagles are an entirely different team with many weapons.
“We like to share the ball. We always have,” said senior point guard Shane Geis. “Sometimes people criticize us and say that we give up open looks, but we only do that to get even better open looks, and it seems to be working.”
Opposing teams truly have no answer for this type of play. A seasoned coach can usually neutralize another team’s game with a little strategy. Teams with one star are very vulnerable to this type of play. Put one lockdown defender on the scorer, and the remaining four players lose their foundation.
But the Eagles continue to give competitors fits. When all five players on the court can handle the ball, score under pressure, or lead the offense, opposing coaches tend to get a little clammy. Here’s another stat to consider: four different players have scored over 20 points in a game for the Eagles this season.
But the Eagles will have to continue to play at a high level to beat Bald Eagle at home this Friday.
While these Eagles are only 4-5, they are better than their record. They lost two tough games to Clearfield, and one to powerhouse Penns Valley. Bald Eagle has also beaten Huntingdon and Central, two of the best teams in the Mountain League.
Bald Eagle’s Jason Jones and Trey Butterworth almost always play well against Tyrone. Expect them to rise to the occasion and hit some big shots. But as long as the Golden Eagles continue to play at a high level, they will be tough to beat.
Don’t miss the action at home this Friday. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
