Senior Emma Witkamp and junior Nicole Ramsey were both satisfied with their results at the District VI Tennis Singles Championships on Monday.
Both Tyrone athletes won their first match of the day. Witkamp later fell in the quarterfinals while Ramsey advanced through the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals.
The day began with Witkamp beating Westmont’s sophomore Isabella Parrish in the 1st round 7-5, 6-3.
Ramsey followed with a win over Huntington freshman Rachel Boonie in the 1st round 6-1, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals, Witkamp lost to Central Cambia’s junior Lydia Paskowski 6-1, 6-2, playing with good effort.
“I thought I did well. I was very surprised when I won my first match. I haven’t won a match yet [at districts], and at the beginning of the first set, I thought I wouldn’t break that streak. But, I kept working and ended up winning,” Witkamp said.
Ramsey also won her second match against Bishop McCort’s sophomore Julie Vittone 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, and moved on to the semifinals.
“I thought I played really well, and also had a lot of fun doing it. Obviously, all the girls who make it there are really good and have lots of experience, so it was really exciting to play girls who are very talented,” Ramsey said.
In the semifinals, Ramsey had a tough match against the number two seed and defending District Champion senior Marley Ratchford from Central Cambria.
After a good fight, Ramsey lost the match 6-1, 6-0.
Tyrone head varsity coach Randy Irvin said he was very proud of how the day went for the girls, and the result of district singles left very hopeful for district doubles.
“I think both Nicole and Emma played extremely well especially considering we played inside on a very fast court. Nicole made it to the semifinals losing to the second-seeded senior from Central Cambria and Emma lost in the quarterfinals in a tough match. The girls played so well that they are seeded second for the District doubles tournament,” Irvin said.
