Teacher of the Week: Amanda Burega
EE: Why did you become a teacher?
Amanda Burega: I saw a decrease in the level of business teachers in high school. I wanted to make a difference by teaching students the basic financial things they will need for their future to be a successful adult.
EE: Why did you choose the subject you teach?
AB: I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting. I was an accountant for twelve years before I became a teacher. I have a passion for accounting and the business field.
EE: What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Tyrone?
AB: I love the atmosphere at Tyrone and all the opportunities that are offered here. That’s why I moved my children here three years ago.
EE: What are some of your favorite hobbies and interests?
AB: I love to read, camp, travel, bowl, and spend time with my kids. I am also a huge Harry Potter Eeyore and sunflower fan.
EE: What is some good advice you’ve been given as a teacher?
AB: Be willing to adapt to your environment. Education is constantly changing and you have to be willing to change with it.
EE: What’s the hardest part of teaching and why?
AB: Trying to get through to a student that doesn’t want to learn. I take it personally and want to see every student succeed. It breaks my heart to see a student struggle.
EE: What are some jobs held before you got into teaching?
AB: Accountant, bank teller, concession stand manager
EE: What is something that students might be surprised to find out about you?
AB: I lived in six different states before the age of 19.
EE: What’s your favorite movie?
AB: The Notebook and all the Harry Potter movies
EE: What is your spirit animal? Why?
AB: Deer – I am highly sensitive and have a strong intuition. I have the power to deal with challenges with grace. I master the art of being both determined and gentle in your approach. Yes, I took an online quiz! LOL
