TAHS Student Authors: Four TAHS Students Take Their Love of Writing to the Next Level
According to Martin Luther, “If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write.”
Four Tyrone Area High School students have taken Luther’s words to heart. Freshman Lance Hockenberry, McKayla Warner, Cheyenne Leech, and sophomore Connor Gority have all begun writing novels.
High school English teacher Leah Deskevich taught all four in class and has been helping them through the writing process.
“I’m always encouraged by students who choose to write novels in their free time…I greatly enjoy reading their chapters and always provide feedback,” said Deskevich.
As for the authors, writing provides them with a creative way to express themselves.
“It gets me out of the normal world and into the world of my imagination,” says Leech.
Freshman Lance Hockenberry is currently writing a fictional story about two rabbits who are twin brothers. In the story, a friend of the two brothers shows them a magic hole, and they accidentally get mixed up in a world of magic.
Hockenberry has been inspired to write since he was in fifth grade. His novel is currently thirteen pages long and growing. Hockenberry says that he enjoys writing whenever he gets the chance.
Freshman McKayla Warner has been writing a Historical Fiction novel about a ghost and a girl with the ability to reincarnate the dead. In the story, the girl brings a boy back from the dead, and they fall in love.
Warner has been writing her novel since last June. It is approximately 10 chapters long, and she is only just getting started. She hopes to make the novel over 300 pages long when finished. Warner’s inspiration has come from her favorite actor, Erik J. Berg.
Freshman Cheyenne Leech is writing a Fan Fiction novel about the series, Transformers Prime. Her story follows two of the characters from the series, Knockout and Eclipse. Leech writes the story to be true to the series while also creating her own unique plot. Her story includes several drawings, including her own original artwork.
Leech has been inspired by Quotev. On Quotev, Leech has posted her story to be read. So far, she has had 403 reads by 155 readers. She has also been inspired by comic strip authors, Maighread Scott and Sarah Stone.
Leech began writing her novel at the beginning of the school year. It is about ten chapters long so far. She enjoys writing whenever she can and often updates it daily.
Sophomore Connor Gority has already finished a novel, Elderquest. It is 150 pages and ten chapters long. In the novel, the city where the characters live, Sazuka City, is under attack. As a result of circumstances out of their control, the main character and his friends end up right in the middle of the battle.
Gority began writing his novel at the end of seventh grade. He finished writing it last year and copies of his book have already been printed.
Gority is currently working on the sequel for the Elderquest trilogy. He is almost finished writing that novel as well.
Gority’s inspiration for his novels has come from his friends. He says that he can visualize each of them as members of his fictional society, and some of their personalities are found in his characters.
Hockenberry, Warner, Leech, and Gority are all very committed to writing and are continually striving to improve their writing skills. The Eagle Eye wishes them luck as they continue working on their novels.
Here is an excerpt from each of the four student novels:
Reading and writing are a big part of the reason senior Taylor Hoover decided to join the Eagle Eye staff team for the first time. She is ready to tackle...
