Swim Season Opens with Double Win Over Bellefonte
The Tyrone girls and boys swim team opened the 2017-2018 season with a double win over Bellefonte on Friday, December 8. The girls triumphed with a score of 102-68 while the boys secured the win with a 102-47 score.
Girls: Tyrone- 102, Bellefonte- 68
The Lady Eagles swept all three relays including the 200 IM, the 200 free, and the 400 free. The relay of Mae Decker, Madison Coleman, Fiona McConnell, and Cate Baran won two of the three relay events.
“As a young team, I believe we did very well. Although, there is a definitely a lot of room for improvement,” said returning Bellwood junior swimmer Gwen Dougherty.
McConnell and M. Decker both secured both wins individually for the team. McConnell placed 1st in the 50 free with a time of 27.78 and in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:15.86. M. Decker won the 100 free event with a 1:02.86 and the 100 backstroke with a 1:08.52.
“We did really well overall as a team especially with all of the new swimmers! [Winning] gives us some more confidence going into the season and it will help us get some more wins,” said McConnell.
Sophomore Baran had two second places in the 50 free (29.07) and 100 free (1:05.79).
Freshman Coleman had a 2:29.14 in the 200 IM and a 1:09.46 in the 100 butterfly. She placed second in both of those events.
Junior Hannah Gampe placed 2nd in 500 with a time of 7:15.99.
Boys: Tyrone- 102, Bellefonte- 47
The team of Jacob Decker, Matt Lenze, Carter Maceno, and Bryce Bauer won the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.
J. Decker was the only boys double winner. He won the 200 IM (2:19.75) and the 100 back (1:01.93).
“We did very well for being such a young team. Everybody came out and gave their all and we got our first win of the season,” said senior swimmer Bryce Bauer.
Bauer placed first in the 50 free with a 26.52. He earned a second place in the 100 free with a 1:02.45.
Lenze secured a win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.65. He also had a time of 1:03.17 in the 100 butterfly, placing second.
Maceno had a time of 6:48.93 in the 500, earning a second place in the event.
“Winning our first meet of the season is great and it gives us momentum moving forward. A lot of us swam close to our fastest times last year which is great for the first meet of the season,” said Bishop Guilfoyle sophomore Lenze.
Nick DelBaggio had two second places in the 200 free (2:27.98) and the 100 breast (1:23.24).
Trenton Gonder placed second in the 50 free with a time of 35.70.
