The Sugar Mill Bakery and Cafe is located in a small, grey building with blue shutters and a hot pink door along East Pleasant Valley Boulevard south of Tyrone.
The building is small, but its size is deceiving, because they offer a large rotating menu of quality baked goods and homemade food.
The cafe is family-owned and operated by Mike and Jennie Maloney of Tyrone.
They just opened their doors in May, and according to Mike Maloney, they are off to a good start.
“The business is doing very well and we have met so many new people in the community who have all been very welcoming,” Maloney said.
Maloney said running a bakery is something he and his wife have thought about for a few years, and with most of their kids graduating from high school, they decided that the time was right.
“Jennie loves to bake and would consistently receive positive feedback on her treats, especially around the holidays when she would make her fudge and cookie tins for people,” said Maloney.
Tyrone resident Connie Shaffer has been a regular customer since they opened.
“They go above and beyond to not only wait on you, but they try to get to know you on a personal level. Also, their food! The pizza, baked goods, and in particular, their sticky rolls, are delicious,” Shaffer said.
According to a recent Facebook post, everything at Sugar Mill is made fresh in small batches. If there is anything left at the end of the day, it either gets thrown out or donated.
Their menu changes daily and usually consists of baked goods such as cookies, cupcakes, cakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, cannolis, coffee cakes, brownies, and fresh bread, as well as pizza, strombolis, mac and cheese, subs and other lunch/dinner items (click the photo slideshow above to see some of their recent items).
They do catering, weddings, rehearsal dinners, and other special events and take orders for special occasions such as birthday parties and gender reveals.
They also work with many local businesses and organizations providing food donations and specials for sports and clubs at the Tyrone Area School District.
The Maloneys recently adjusted their operating hours to offer more evening hours.
Beginning on October 18, they will be open for walk-ins on Thursday from 11-7, Friday 11-9, and Sunday 11-8. They are open by appointment on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They will also offer pre-order lunches on Wednesdays.
According to their Facebook page, they will soon have an online menu and a customer rewards program. New menu items are also on the way, including soups, sauces, pasta, and more.

“We are excited to be a part of the Tyrone Area small business community and look forward to providing quality food to everyone in the area for many years to come,” Maloney said.
