Sixteen TAHS students qualify for the National History Day State Competition

The regional competition was hosted by the IUP Department of History.

Thirty two students from Tyrone Area High School competed at the regional level of the National History Day (NHD)competition at IUP on Friday, March 27.  At the High School level, 16 students placed high enough to qualify for the State NHD competition at Millersville University on May 12-13, 2015.

This year’s theme is Leadership and Legacy in History.  According to the NHD website, the theme is chosen to “provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.”

The students at Tyrone chose a diverse group of leaders as their project topics.  From the famous – Clara Barton, Stephen Hawking and Mother Teresa to the obscure – Alan Turning, the Bielski Brothers, and Fritz Haber.

Students created projects ranging from traditional papers, presentation boards, websites and documentaries.

Sophomore Paige Umholtz was very impressed by the projects this year.

“All the projects that I was able to witness this year were fantastic,” said Umholtz, “”I think the judges had a hard job picking the ones that got the opportunity to move on.”

Sophomore Nathan Hormell is very excited to be able to move on to the state competition.

“I know from the past years that I went, states is really fun,” said Hormell, “I am very excited to be moving on and to see this year’s competition.”

“I was proud of the fact that Tyrone was able to send more projects on to the state competition than any other school,” said social studies teacher Todd Cammarata.
