After a rocky start to the 2024 volleyball season the Lady Golden Eagles made the trip to the home of the Chestnut Ridge Lady Lions on Thursday, September 12th to secure their third win of the season in four sets.
After losing the previous Tuesday to the Philipsburg Lady Mounties, the Eagles came out strong with something to prove against CR.
They had a great first set ending in a 25-16 win for the Lady Eagles. They had a strong offensive blocking game, making good touches at the net, and making easy ups for senior libero, Kylee Nelson.
“Offensively we had a very good game,” said senior middle hitter, Taylan McGlynn, “We worked well as a team, and our communication at the net was better than it had been all season.”
The energy in the gym was electric, and that carried over into the second set. This was a very strong offensive set for the Lady Eagles, which helped contribute to junior setter Bailey Woomer’s 14 assists this match.
The second set was a shutout and the Lady Eagles came out on top. The final score was 25-12.
At the start of the third set the Lady Lions of Chestnut Ridge had a strong service run that put Tyrone down. It was a fight to get back up and a very competitive set for the Eagles. Even though Tyrone played a scrappy defensive game they just couldn’t pull out a win this set and lost 23-25.
After the third set the Lady Eagles knew they had to stay disciplined on defense and up their service game, and that they did. Junior outside hitter Abby Anthony rallied up 22 service points, 6 aces, and 5 kills this match. She had an outstanding game, and took the lead of the team from behind the service line.
“I think our team had a really good serving game,” said Anthony, “Serving is the one part of the game that you have complete control over, so I make sure I take it very seriously.”
The fourth set was a 25-15 win for the Eagles, which helped the Lady Eagles hit their current record of 3-3.
This is a big win, and what feels like a turning point in the season for the Eagles. The coaches for Tyrone couldn’t be more proud of the girls’ performance in this match.
“I’m really proud of how well the girls worked together tonight,” said head coach Alicia Weaver, “Their energy on and off the court was high and I think that really plays into how well they perform.”
The Lady Eagles play next at 7:15 on Tuesday, September 17 at Hollidaysburg Area High School.
