Junior Kyle Scott placed second and sophomore Kyler Suhoney placed sixth at the 2025 PIAA District VI Wrestling Championship on February 14 and 15 and will advance to the PIAA Regional Wrestling Tournament on February 28 and March 1.
Scott had a dominating tournament in the early rounds but fell just short of reaching the top of the podium, losing 9-1 to Bald Eagle senior Caleb Close in the finals.
Scott is 36-3 on the season, with all three losses coming to Close.
“He’s a good opponent, obviously,” Scott said after his LHAC loss. “I’ve had some troubles with him in the past. I don’t know. He’s really big, and I’m a little undersized. I’m not a true 189-pounder. That does play a factor, but I think I wrestled well.” Scott told the Altoona Mirror.
Scott said he is ready for another possible rematch with Close at Regionals.
“I’m super excited. I’ve been working really hard these past few weeks and I’m hoping to get through to States,” Scott said.
Suhoney was the last wrestler in his weight class to advance to regionals, earning sixth place at 172.
“I’m the underdog going into regionals but I’m ready to prove myself,” Suhoney said.
Although Tyrone only had two wrestlers advance to regionals they had several others turn in solid tournaments, with one senior just missing the cut for Regionals.
Senior Logan Rumberger missed the cut for Regionals by one place, finishing seventh in the 127-pound weight class.
Freshman Mason VanAllman won his first match but lost his next two, the last loss on a controversial call. VanAllman butted heads with his opponent and because his opponent was ruled out with a concussion, so VanAllman suffered an injury disqualification.
Fortunately for VanAllman, he is a freshman and is expected to be elite as he gets older.
While Rumberger won’t be wrestling at Regionals, he is still helping to get his teammates ready for the big tournament.
“They’ve been working hard all season Kyle has been succeeding all year, taking first and second at tournaments,” Rumberger said. ”Kylar is a sophomore. He took sixth at districts and is an underdog at Regionals. I’m proud of all their accomplishments and I’m looking forward to seeing them move on to states.”
In addition to Rumberger, 2024 TAHS grad Braden Ewing is also helping to prepare Scott and Suhoney for regionals.
Due to injury, Ewing is taking a medical absence from his wrestling career at Brown University and is using some of his time off to help get his former teammates ready to compete.
Tyrone head wrestling coach Quenton Wright is also excited to see how his wrestlers will perform on the big stage. “We are going to go smash some faces here at Regionals and we can’t wait to get started,” Wright said.
