Recent TAHS Grad Expanding Local Butcher Shop
Tyrone’s small business community is growing as a new generation of entrepreneurs are starting new businesses and expanding existing ones.
Among these is TAHS Class of 2019 grad Cash Sprankle, who recently took over his family’s business, Sprankle’s Butcher Shop, at 938 Hoovers Lane in Tyrone.
Sprankle is a 2021 Penn Tech graduate, but after Penn Tech, Sprankle was accepted to the Penn State butchering program at University Park in State College.
According to Sprankle, the program only accepts five people a year, and once accepted he learned the latest in butchering techniques while receiving part-time wages.
The program included four-month of hands-on and classroom training at the Penn State University meat lab.
Sprankle finished the program right before the 2021 deer hunting season and dove into the family business the following season.
He has been working alongside his dad since he was 12 years old and is excited to take over and expand the business in the coming years.
“I’m proud of Cash and how well he has been putting everything together to be able to open up and expand the business,” says Cash’s father, Chad, who founded the butcher shop.
Sprankle’s originally only offered deer processing, but with Cash’s training, they are expanding to provide year-round common butchering, wild game processing, and livestock butchering.
“This will allow us to broaden our customer base,” said Sprankle. “I’m excited to open up more and start a new chapter in my life.”
The first project that Sprankle tackled was adding in a new cooler and converting a smaller cooler into a larger walk-in freezer.
They also added a new railing system that will easily allow the butchered product to be pushed through the process more safely and efficiently so product can be cut to the customer’s needs and packaged all in one building.
Sprankle says that they offer a high-quality product for an affordable price. They are welcoming new customers outside of the traditional deer processing that the shop has offered for years.
