State Wrestling Tournament Q & A with Jared Beckwith and Coach Blair Packer
This week senior Jared Beckwith will head to the state wrestling tournament in Hershey in the 195 pound weight class.
Eagle Eye: How do you feel about your performance this past weekend?
Jared Beckwith: I could have done better. I had a solid first day, and then the second day I kind of got off pace. I also lost two really close matches.
Coach Packer: It is hard to be happy when he didn’t win the gold but I thought Jared had a good tournament. He pinned his first two opponents. His next two opponents are very good and he only lost to them by a point or two. I felt that Jared wrestled well.
EE: How much do you think you accomplished this year so far?
JB: A lot
CP: Jared is one of the top 16 wrestlers [in the state] in his weight class.
EE: Coach Packer, how do you prepare a wrestler for states? What did you have Jared do this week to get ready?
CP: I try to stay as positive as I can. We work on moves and situations that we feel may have cost him the matches he lost. From a motivational point of view, we also have him practice with outside competition to get a different look.
EE: Who do you face in your first match?
JB: I think I saw the name but I don’t remember now.
EE: Jared, what is your motivation for your matches in Hershey?
JB: To go in fresh and do the best I can.
EE: Coach Packer, what are you hoping for at states? How far do you think Jared can go?
CP: I want Jared to be a PIAA Champ. To do this, he will have to put four flawless matches together. Jared has had a couple of good days of practices and, barring injury, I think Jared will place at states.
