Senior female wrestler Gracie Pluebell and sophomore Haliegh Hunter have competed with the boys’ wrestling team all season.
With limited opportunities to wrestle against boys in the regular dual meet season, the two Tyrone female athletes got the opportunity to compete against other female wrestlers at the PIAA District VI girls wrestling Championships.
Pluebell lost her first match 9-6 to the 7th seed Jadelyn Boring.
Going into the consolation bracket and her final match of the season, Pluebell was pinned by the number one seed, Kendyl Meersand.
While it wasn’t the outcome that she was hoping for, the experience of getting to compete in the sport she loves and making it to Districts was good.
“I was very glad to have the opportunity again to go to districts for my senior year. I was glad to meet up with wrestlers that I’m close with and wrestle at other tournaments. It didn’t go the way I wanted it to, but I still had the chance to go,” Pluebell said.
This was Hunter’s first year of wrestling, and she posted a very respectable season record of 7-13.
Hunter has wrestled 114 and 107 for Tyrone this season.
This was also Hunter’s first district tournament, and she was seeded 7th.
Hunter won her first match by fall against the 10th seed Karma Bellows. She then lost by fall to the second seeded Mariah Hershberger in the second round.
Going into the consolation bracket, Hunter then lost to the 9th seed 9-,1 ending her district run.
While neither Pluebell or Hunter placed at districts, they will both go down in Tyrone wrestling history as trailblazers for girls wrestling, one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
