Playoff Preview: Tyrone vs. Penn Cambria
The Tyrone boys basketball team is coming off of an electric first-round win over the Huntington Bearcats with a score of 71-43. Tyrone will not have an easier challenge as they advanced to the semi-finals now and travel to Cresson on Saturday and take on Penn Cambria.
The last time these two teams met Penn Cambria took a commanding win over the Golden Eagles in their own gymnasium during Tyrone’s annual Holiday Tournament with the score being 57-39.
It will be a really good matchup as these two teams are the #2 and #3 seeds in district 6.
Players to look out for on the Panthers are #20 Garrot Harrold who averages 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. Harrold is the primary option for the Panthers and will be difficult to guard as he has a great touch around the rim and a solid midrange shot. The next option for Penn Cambria is #12 Mason McCarthy who averages 12 points and 6 rebounds per game.
Having three guys over 6’3” will be a challenging but interesting matchup for Tyrone’s big men.
The Panthers started out the year fairly hot going 14-1 but lost 4 of their last nine games.
Penn Cambria is 19-5 on the year and led by Head Coach James Ronan who has brought Penn Cambria on the rise in the district the past two years.
Their most recently played game was the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, Feb 19th, where they took a loss to the 20-4 Richland Rams 82-75.
The Golden Eagles also started out their year fairly well going 12-2 in the first half of the season but then lost 5 games on the back stretch of the season. They still claimed co-Mountain League champs with Bellefonte.
Tyrone is also coming off one of their best wins of the season only allowing 43 points, 0 of them being in the second quarter which showed a spectacular defensive outing for Tyrone and,the Golden eagles could not miss much on the offensive side of the ball.
Senior Landen DeHaas led the way with 23 points followed by Senior David Lang with 15. Junior Center Ross Gampe also added 12 points.
