The wait is over. After losing several close games, including two in overtime, the Tyrone Lady Eagles notched their first win of the season on Saturday at Phillipsburg.
Sophomore Olivia Newlin and freshman Kadence Berry each scored two goals and Bellwood senior Briley Campbell added one for the Lady Eagles in a 5-2 victory.
“As a team, we played really well, said sophomore Pyper Sparklin. “We definitely needed that win. As a team, our attitudes, because of that game, have improved. We know how we can play and we are going to try to stick to that.”
Tyrone has been competitive in almost every match this season, but was not able to put up a win until Saturday.
Berry scored Tyrone’s first goal, she dribbled the ball on the outside, cut to the middle, and took a shot just inside the 18, which snuck by the Philipsburg keeper.
Tyrone’s next goal came on a corner kick. Tyrone crashed the net hard and Newlin found the back of the net on a header.
Tyrone also had many other quality chances and shots on goal in the game. Philipsburg-Osceola had great play from the goalkeeper position, which kept the score close for the Lady Mounties.
“It was a great game. Hopefully, we can carry this on throughout the season.” said freshman Kadence Berry.
Tyrone also had good defense and goalkeeper Pyper Sparklin had several good saves. The two goals Tyrone gave up were both the result of bad bounces given up on corner kicks.
Most of the game was played on the Philipsburg’s defensive half and Tyrone put a lot of pressure on their defense.
Toward the end of the game, the ball started traveling into Tyrone’s defense, but they held P-O scoreless in the game’s final minutes.
“The girls did well and succeeded in their first win of the season,” said freshman Alivia Houghtan.
