New Teacher Profile: Miss Markel
Tyrone Area School District’s newest math teacher Chelsea Markel graduated from Tyrone High School herself. She started out at Tyrone as a tutor for students who needed extra instruction to help them pass their Keystone Exams in math, but now she has her own classroom and schedule at Tyrone.
“I like working at my old high school because I know most of the teachers. They taught me when I went here and I can learn from them. I also like the atmosphere here at Tyrone High school,” said Markel.
According to Markel, she didn’t always want to be a math teacher.
“I actually wanted to become a forensic scientist, until about half way through college,” said Markel.
Markel graduated from Penn State main and went straight into teaching.
Markel spent three years as a substitute teacher. Last year she was a math tutor as part of the AmeriCorps program.
This year she is finally a full time member of the Tyrone teaching staff.
Markel also coaches volleyball at Philipsburg Osceola High School.
“I love spending time with my family and like to stay active,” added Markel.
