The Tyrone Area Middle School held a “The Soup-er Bowl” food drive for the Tyrone Food Bank last week, February 5-9, to coincide with Super Bowl week.
The middle school student council organized the event, which took place each morning during breakfast and advisory. Outside of the cafeteria, they decorated with balloons and the logos of each Super Bowl team.
Student Council member Amaya Martin was one of the leaders of this event.
“I didn’t think the outcome would be as successful as it was. Our goal was 500 and we reached 600, so overall I would say it was successful,” said Martin.
Students who participated in the collection were provided with one raffle ticket for each can they brought. On Monday, February 12, a drawing was held to determine a winner of the raffle.
Fifth-grade student Owen Crowell was the raffle winner.
“I brought in ten cans. I won a $10 gift card to Delgrosso’s, gummy worms, and a football game. I’m so excited.” said Owen Crowell.
The week ended with a Jersey day on Friday where students could wear any jersey in preparation for the Super Bowl. Middle School Principal Shane Cowher delivered the cans to the food bank on Wednesday, February 14.
“I am so proud of Mrs. Hetrick and her student council this year. They are dedicated to serving our community, and they really put in the work to do it. ”said Jean Bressler from the Tyrone Food Bank “This is overwhelming. A lot of our clients are older and they can’t cook, but they can open a can of soup.”
In January, the student council received a commendation from The Heavenly Hats Foundation for their donation of $100 for a hat day held in the fall. Heavenly Hats provides hats for cancer patients who commonly lose their hair.
“Today is Valentine’s Day. I would say these kids have hearts as big as any,” Cowher said.
