Mr. Cammarata the New Newspaper Head Advisor
After eight years as the advisor for the Eagle Eye, Ms. Leah Dobrowolsky has had to step down due to changes in her teaching schedule. Taking over the Eagle Eye this year will be Mr. Todd Cammarata, tenth grade civics teacher and Mock Trial advisor.
Mr. Cammarata, who has been a teacher at Tyrone High School for 16 years, is extremely excited to be leading the newspaper. He sees it as a welcome new challenge. “I hope that the students will have fun and do good work this year. Producing a newspaper is hard work, but it can be very rewarding and fun, especially when you get to see the community reading and reacting to your work,” said Cammarata.
His main point of interest that he is stressing to all of his students is that “the best way to learn how to write is to write,” Cammarata stated. So the main focus of the first semester will be to produce stories and work on the technique of interviewing, writing and revising.
Cammarata has some experience in the newspaper industry that he will bring to the job. His father ran a weekly newspaper in Patton, Pennsylvania while he was growing up. The Union Press Courier in Patton was started by Cammarata’s grandfather and was run by his father until the late 1990s.
Growing up around the newspaper business, Mr. Cammarata feels like he can bring some of his expereince to the Eagle Eye and help keep the journalism program moving in the right direction.
Cammarata looks forward to working with the students to produce a paper that the students will enjoy reading. “Doing this gives me a chance to work with students one on one,” said Cammarata “I enjoy getting to know students that way…also, since I grew up writing printing and working for a newspaper I want to bring my experiences over from the real word and produce the best product possible.”
Some of the possible changes that Cammarata has discussed with the students is the possiblilty of bringing the printed version of the paper back or perhaps expanding the online presence of the Eagle Eye. Due to printing and distribution problems, the Eagle Eye currently exists only as a blog.
