Mike Cherry named new varsity wrestling coach
Mr. Mike Cherry was named as the new head varsity wrestling coach by the Tyrone Area School Board at their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening.
This ends a several month period of uncertainty for the team after the head coaching position was reopened by the board earlier this fall. Long time coach Blair Packer declined to reapply for the job and the board’s first choice for his replacement, State College’s Chad Dubin, resigned after only two days.
The new staff consists of Mike Cherry as head varsity coach and Bill Dixon as the assistant varsity coach.
The junior high will be led by Terry Albright and recent Tyrone graduate Jared Beckwith as his assistant.
“I’m very excited about the job and my goals are to bring Tyrone back to the wrestling town it used to be,” said Cherry, “Tyrone used to be the powerhouse team around here when I wrestled at Bellwood.”
“I’m glad [to be here] and I plan to work with Terry to help these kids.” said junior high assistant Jarred Beckwith.
The team was gathered Wednesday October 15th to meet the coaches and have a pizza party. There the coaches talked to the kids and told them about the upcoming season.
The season’s regular practices start November 17th.
