Juniors Brandon McClure and Eli Woomer combined for a two-hit shutout in the Golden Eagles’ season-opening 3-0 win over the Penns Valley Rams last night in Tyrone.
After a dominant four-inning outing by McClure where he tallied five strikeouts and gave up just one hit, Woomer came in relief and threw three scoreless innings to close the game for Tyrone.
On offense, senior Landon Hamer led the Golden Eagles with two hits. Brienn Jones and Conner McClure both tallied an RBI. The other run was scored on a passed ball that got behind the catcher.
“Our pitching was the most important factor to us winning, but timely hits by Brienn and Connor helped with the team’s confidence and morale, which is super important when playing in close games like this one,” Tyrone senior catcher Landon Hamer said.
Tyrone’s offense looked solid, with all hitters showing good bat-to-ball skills. The Golden Eagles had six hits and no Tyrone hitter recorded a strikeout in the game.
Tyrone will take on Bald Eagle Area in Wingate on Wednesday, March 19, at 4:30. Bald Eagle began their season Tuesday with a 14-4 win over Bishop Guilfoyle and should be a good matchup for the Golden Eagles.
