Tyrone senior Maddy Rockwell made Tyrone girls volleyball history last Thursday by breaking the school record for assists.
The assist record of 2,022 was previously held by alumni Mattie Cherry, who set the record in 2021.
“This accomplishment was very big for me. I remember being a manager in fifth grade for the varsity team and looking up to Mattie [Cherry], so experiencing her reaching her record and I would’ve never imagined myself breaking that. The support I had from my teammates and coaches can’t compare to anything,” Rockwell said.
Rockwell says that she has truly found a family in the team this year and her strong chemistry with her offense on the court illustrates this perfectly.
According to teammates, Rockwell is a leader and someone that they look up to and admire.
Her teammates say that she has great energy and drive, and her work ethic is incredible. The girls and the coaches couldn’t be more proud of her and the work she has put into her position.
“Setting a record for our program is such an outstanding accomplishment. What is even more impressive that people might not see, is the standard that she sets when in the gym,” Assistant Coach Brandi Moyer said, “Our team is lucky to have such a determined and hardworking leader. Maddy should be very proud of herself.”
Rockwell helped lead the Eagles to district finals in the 2022 season and hopes to lead her team back to the finals again this season.
“Being on this team gives me such a huge purpose to show up and be the best version of myself. I give my team most of the credit for this because without them I wouldn’t be close to where I am at now in my athletic career,” Rockwell said.
