Learn When to Trust Dad

By Sarah Diller, Guest Writer

“It all started with my annoying dad. My dad is a trustworthy person… most of the time. He loves to pull little pranks now and then just because he can. He does things like put rubber bands on the spray thing by the sink so when someone get a drink they get soaked. Stuff like that All he wants to do is have fun.

So I had just gotten off the school bus on a cold February afternoon. I hadn’t gotten a very good lunch at school so I was hungry. I walked past the dining room to get to the kitchen, and I saw a little basket sitting on the dining room table. As I walked closer I saw it has red tissue paper in it. “Oh, it must be a Valentine’s Day present,” I thought. I walked closer and I saw it had something else in it. CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISINS!!!!!!!!! My favorite!!! At least, that’s what I thought it was. The bag the chocolate was in didn’t have a label, but it was definitely chocolate and it definitely looked liked raisins.

As I looked for a tag on the basket I find a gift certificate that said, “To: John Diller”. Dad. “Dad, can I have some of this chocolate stuff?” I yelled to my dad who was in the kitchen. He looked over into the dining room to see what I was talking about. He smiled a very sly looking smile, almost like he had gotten an idea. “Sure,” he said. That’s when I wish my “Dad’s prank” sensors had started tingling.

I grabbed one out of the bag, and put it to my mouth. Dad was still smiling. I opened my mouth and put it in my mouth. It tasted good… at first. When I bit into it, my mouth filled with a disgusting taste of bitterness and grossness. COFFEE!?!?!?

“Uck!!!”, I yelled as I spit it out. “Ha ha! Didn’t like that did ya’?” my dad laughed. He just let me eat a chocolate covered COFFEE BEAN!!! Knowing full well I hate coffee. “You seriously think this is funny?”, I asked him. “Yup”, he said. He started laughing again. I was mad but you can’t stay mad at my dad.

I have since forgiven my dad but he wasn’t off the hook. A few weeks later, I filled his empty Axe shampoo bottle with my strawberry scented shampoo. Lets just say we’re even. I still wish that I had seen that sly smile as a signal that something bad was going to happen. Lesson learned, don’t trust Dad when he smiles like that. This is definitely my favorite mistake.”
