The Lady Eagles were upset in five sets by the Huntingdon Bearcats on Tuesday, September 23rd.
After an intense win on Monday against the Lady Blue Devils of Bellwood, the Lady Eagles felt strong coming into the match, but the Bearcats were more scrappy than Tyrone was prepared for.
The first set was slow to start. The Eagles were dragging their feet on serve receive early on, and the blockers at the net were struggling to stay closed.
In the middle of the set, the Eagles picked up their energy and started to liven up. They were able to close out the set with a close victory of 25-21.
The second set started strong with sophomore setter Amaya Martin giving the Lady Eagles an 8 point lead with 5 serves and 3 aces. The Bearcats ended up checking up with the score tied 22-22. The Lady Bearcats were able to steal the set 25-22.
The third set was another close call with the Eagles just barely winning. This set was yet again another slow start, with Tyrone just not being able to find a rhythm at the beginning of the set.
One thing the Eagles did really well with was hitting. Tyrone’s hitters were able to find good shots and keep the ball in the court. The Eagles were able to take the win 25-23 in a sloppy scrap back and forth with Huntingdon.
The fourth set tested the Eagles’ mental strength and was a close game. They fought hard to put a ball away against the Bearcats’ scrappy defense and stay focused behind the service line; however, the game slipped away from them, and they lost the set 23-25.
“We couldn’t pull through and get the win. We got beat in serve receive and couldn’t find the floor when we were hitting,” sophomore setter Amaya Martin said.
The fifth and deciding set was a huge blowout. The Lady Eagles ended up getting stuck in a 9 point rut, barely being able to send the ball over on serve receive. In an effort to take the game back, Head Coach Alesha Weaver called two time-outs in hopes that they would be able to take the set back, but the Eagles were not able to rally and lost in a 15-6 set.
