The Tyrone Girls soccer team battled Clearfield on Senior Night but was unable to find the back of the net, losing 2-0.
Clearfield was able to control play in the Tyrone half of the field early and managed two early shots on goal in the opening minutes of the game.
However, freshman goalie Pyper Sparklin handled both shots to deny Clearfield. The freshman had a good night in goal, facing 15 shots, and recording 13 saves on the night.
“Clearfield had some really good shots, I didn’t think I would be able to save a lot of them,” Sparklin said.
Tyrone’s backline worked hard against Clearfield’s speedy forwards. Defenders Becca Lewis, Maddy Whitby, Sarah Chichester, and Makenzie Soellner were constantly working to keep the ball from reaching the goal.
Although Clearfield started the game with a couple of shots, Tyrone was able to counterattack Clearfield’s defensive line. A beautiful shot on goal by senior Lainey Quick was saved by Clearfield’s keeper.
Clearfield’s first goal resulted from a penalty kick called because of a Tyrone trip in the penalty area. Clearfield took advantage and shot to the right bottom corner that slid past Sparklin’s fingers for a Clearfield goal.
One of Tyrone’s best scoring chances of the game came from Briley Campbell on a free kick that was just short of the far post.
Soon after, senior captain Lainey Quick had two more solid shots on goal that were stopped by Clearfield’s goalie.
Clearfield’s final goal was scored on a breakaway in the second half, making the score 2-0.
Before the game, seniors Lainey Quick, Mackenzie Gunsallus, Rebecca Lewis, Makenzie Soellner, Madison Whitby, and Annalyse Bardell were honored.
Tyrone’s next game is away at Bishop Gilfoyle on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
