Lady Eagles End 22 Year Skid, Advance in State Playoffs

The Tyrone Lady Eagles won their first state playoff game in 22 years Friday night when they defeated Avonworth by a score of 45-37. The last time the girls won a state playoff game was back in 1998 before this team was even born.

Junior Shannon Shaw led Tyrone in scoring with 11 points draining 3 shots from beyond the arc. Sophomore’s Jaida Parker and Stephanie Ramsey combined for 19 points with Ramsey knocking down 3 more triples.

Tyrone jumped out to a 11-5 lead early in the first quarter but watched their lead disappear as Avonworth scored the final 6 points of the quarter tying the game at 11 as the first quarter came to a close.

Avonworth took their first lead of the game when they scored the first points of the second quarter. After they took the 13-11 lead Shannon Shaw and Stephanie Ramsey hit back to back threes starting their 10-0 run to start the quarter. After that moment Tyrone never trailed again.

Avonworth attempted to regain the lead as they cut Tyrone’s lead to 31-29 late in the third but a freethrow and a drained three pointer by Emma Getz swung the momentum right back to Tyrone.

A made basket by Jaida Parker and another clutch three point play by Emma Getz put the game away giving Tyrone a 10 point 40-30 lead with a little over 5 minutes to play in the game.

With the win, Tyrone will travel to Clarion Tuesday night to take on the District 10 Champion Mercyhurst Prep in the round of 16 at 6:00.
