The Tyrone Lady Eagles lost in a nail-biter against the Penns Valley Lady Rams on January 27th. The first time they faced the Lady Rams, they fell short 53-49.
This time it was even closer, as both teams had to go into overtime to determine a winner. But luck was on the side of the Rams once again, as Tyrone lost, this time by only two points, 45-43 in overtime.
Tyrone Head Coach Mike Whitling felt the game had a playoff atmosphere.
“I thought we competed at a high level last night against Penns Valley. The game was a very tightly played game and offense was hard to find for both teams,” Whitling said.
According to Whitling a lot of factors contributed to the loss.
“Our free throw percentage was a little too low, we were a little careless with the ball especially off of great defensive possessions, and we missed some open looks that we have been making recently,” Whitling said.
The Lady Eagles took the lead at the end of the first quarter, outscoring the Rams 15-10.
Going into halftime the Lady Eagles still had the lead 25-17.
However, Penns Valley chipped away at the deficit in the second half, tying the score 38-38 going into overtime.
Junior Claire Lehman thought highly of the game against Penns Valley.
“Penns Valley is an aggressive team that we handled well. We limited their shots around the perimeter. We boxed out on defense only allowing them to have two offensive rebounds. It came down to the last seconds of the game, and our shots just didn’t go in,” Lehman said.
Whitling added that he would like to see the team improve offensive efficiency and “take care of the ball.”
Freshman Lola Woomer led the Lady Eagles with 18 points, followed by Junior Alayna Woomer with 9.
