Tyrone Lady Eagles made the trip to Punxsutawney on January 29 to face the Chucks. The Eagles battled but took the loss by three points, 52-49.
Tyrone held the lead the whole game until the 4th quarter when each team exchanged the lead multiple times.
Junior Claire Lehman led the Lady Eagles with a total of 18 points while freshman Lola Woomer wasn’t far behind with a total of 16 points.
The Lady Eagles scored right off the tip, with a lay-up from Alayna Woomer.
The Lady Chucks missed multiple lay-ups underneath, which led to more offensive chances for Tyrone. Lehman was able to finish the 3-point play for Tyrone, while she was fouled driving to the basket.
The Eagles went on a 5-0 run until Punxsutawney put their first points up on the board. But that didn’t stop the drive from Tyrone they continued to put up 5 more points, causing The Chucks to take an early timeout. The Eagles had a 2-point lead, with the quarter ending 10-8.
Lola Woomer scored the first points for the Eagles to open up the 2nd quarter. The Chucks played a pressure defense, there was a trap as soon as a Tyrone player crossed half-court. The Lady Eagles took advantage of this and found the open player underneath the hoop.
The Lady Eagles caused many turnovers from the Chucks, including a 5-second call when they tried to inbound the ball with less than a minute left to play in the first half. Tyrone went into halftime with a 3-point lead, 26-23.
The Chucks drilled a three-point shot to tie the game at the start of the 3rd quarter. On the next possession, Gribel drilled another three for Punxsy to take the lead, but wasn’t far after the game was tied back up 29-29, with a three from Lehman for Tyrone.
The Eagles took their largest lead of the game by 6 points 37-31. They held this lead for 2 minutes before the Chucks were able to score under the hoop. The 3rd quarter ended 39-39.
The Chucks hit multiple shots in a row to gain their largest lead of the game of 8 points. The Lady Eagles kept up their hustle and were able to bring Punxsy’s lead down to 2 points with 40 seconds left in the game.
Tyrone had to commit quick fouls to regain possession of the ball. Lola Woomer hit a clutch three with 15 seconds left to bring the Eagles closer, the score was 50-49. The Eagles weren’t able to pull through the win, final 52-49.
“I thought that we had great effort and played through a lot of adversity. We tried to overcome some bad bounces and some bad luck but ultimately we played well enough and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end,” said varsity head coach Whitling.
