Lady Eagles Defeat Mounties in Five Sets to Open 2019 Season

The Lady Eagles Volleyball team opened their season with a nail biting five set victory over the visiting Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties on Thursday, September 5.

In the first set, the Lady Eagles came out slow with the score of 9-3 until senior Bri Foy went back to serve. Foy and the Lady Eagles kept Philipsburg at 13 as the girls ran serve after serve and kept pressure on the other side. The first set went to the Lady Eagles winning 25-15.

“We came out strong serving which definitely gave us an advantage and allowed us to get on Philipsburg early to win,” said junior Makenna Bauer.

The beginning of the second set started just like the first. Philipsburg scored five points before the Lady Eagles got the ball to battle back. The second set was much closer than the first, 25-21.

Things took a turn in the third and fourth set. Both sets were neck and neck the entire time until at the very end. Philipsburg pulled through winning set three by 25-20 and set four by 25-23.

“The girls never gave up in sets three and four which shows their grit and maturity to win. The girls stayed focused and kept the pressure on Philipsburg the entire time,” said Assistant Head Coach Bob Oberheim.

The fifth and final match were just like the third and fourth. Points went back and forth until Foy went back to serve and put pressure on Philipsburg. The Lady Eagles did everything they could to keep the ball off the floor and in the end Philipsburg caved. The Lady Eagles won the 5th set 15-13 to win the game.

“We weren’t as consistent as we would have liked to be. We were working in a couple younger players into the lineup and it was the first home game. Playing against a tough team like Philipsburg made for a tough night as well. We did enough to win and Philipsburg exposed our weaknesses and gave us an idea about where we can improve,” said Head Coach Mike Kraft.

The Lady Eagles next face the Central Dragons away on 9/10 at 7:15.
